1 of 130 copies printed on Fabriano Book paper by the Allen Press.
Selected by D. Steven Corey for inclusion in the Book Club of California's California Printing, the list of books significant or representative of California style of printing.
Corey wrote that is "perfectly exemplifies three hallmarks of the press: impeccable presswork, dampened handmade paper, and the use of several colors throughout the text.
It is also their most sustained effort, the longest text of their great series of folios, and the last book printed on the 1830 Acorn-Smith handpress.
In addition, the book is important, but little-known work , fully worthy of this lavish treatment"
THIS IS COREY'S OWN COPY, purchased from famous library of Robert Elwell, with the latter's bookplate by Reynolds Stone, and posthumous bookplate printed for Corey's books.
This rare and interesting text first appeared in 1480, was in its 15th edition by 1512, and was translated into English in 1535.
The only other English edition was published in 1816, and of the 98 copies printed, all but 42 were destroyed by fire. One expert at the time posited that if the book were not so scarce, and the spelling so obsolete, it may have become as popular as Aesop's fables. Allen Press Biblio. 31.
