Signed copy of "The Red Pony" by John Steinbeck. New York: The Viking Press, 1945. First illustrated edition. Large octavo, [1]-131 [1]pp, "produced in full compliance with all War Production Board Conservation orders." Signed on the front free endpaper "John Steinbeck." With water-color illustrations by Wesley Dennis. Printed by Kipe Offset Process Company and bound by H. Wolff in gray-tan cloth stamped in gold and blue on spine and in blue on front cover. Illustration attached to front cover. Page edges stained blue. Pictorial endpapers. Housed in its original slipcase which has an illustrated title page adhered to the front. Light page toning and sound binding. Boldly signed by Steinbeck. The slipcover is worn, with rubbing to the edges and corners. Sunning to spine.
"The Red Pony" is an episodic novella written by John Steinbeck and first published in 1933 - the first three chapters were published in magazines from 1933 to 1936. The final book was compiled and published in 1937 by Covici Friede. A movie version, with music by Aaron Copland, was adapted and released in 1949.
