Description
AMERICAN FOLK ART DRAWING, watercolor and ink on paper, the whimsical "GETTYSBURG / WEATHER PROPHET.", with multiple figures, including a cat called "The Howler of Monterey", and a tree called "Storm Splitter". Signed and inscribed include "AW Greely / Chief U.S. Weather Bureau" and "Dani E Sickles". Housed under glass in a modern frame. Circa 1893. 18 3/4" x 23 1/2" sight, 22 1/4" x 26 3/4" OA.
Good overall visual condition, minor to moderate areas of toning, moderate wear around the edges. Laid down on board. Not examined outside of frame.
Provenance: From a Virginia private collection.
Catalogue Note: A.W. (Adolphus) Greely, served as Captain of the 81st US Colored Infantry towards the end of the American Civil War. After the war he was a noted polar explorer, and in 1935 he was a recipient of the Medal of Honor.
