Description
Rev. John Bovee Dods (1795-1872). Azotic oxide (Nitrous oxide) or laughing gas cabinet made of mahogany with brass fittings, ca. 1840s. Inscribed "Dr. Dods' Azotic Bureau New York” in gilt script along one side of the box. Dods, an influential spiritualist, mesmerist, and philosopher, used this box for administering laughing gas during one of his lectures.
Dods gave lectures to members of congress, including Henry Clay, Sam Houston, and Daniel Webster. Edgar Allan Poe wrote three short stories on Mesmerism based on Dr. Dods: "A Tale of the Ragged Mountains," "Mesmeric Revelation," and "The Facts in the Case of M. Valdemar." Dimensions: Height: 7 1/2 in x width: 10 1/2 in x depth: 7 1/2 in.
