Description
Crocodile-Shaped Prow, carved wood, conus shell, traces of pigment, Iatmul people, Papua New Guinea, Mindimbit village, Middle Sepik River. The prows of the large latmul war canoes were fashioned as heads of crocodiles, and indeed at times the whole canoe is conceived to represent a crocodile. See related work in The Michael C. Rockefeller Memorial Collection, Metropolitan Museum of Art, NY. Size: 6.5'' x 26'' x 13.5'' (17 x 66 x 34 cm). Height on Stand: 14" (36 cm).
