Description
A Papua New Guinea gable figure from the Iatmul people in Kanganaman Village, Mid Sepik River Region. Carved wooden female figure with dark painted finish, featuring a fish form engulfing the head and running down the back, with a crocodile head emerging from the base. Used at a gable of a ceremonial house. Wear to finish, damage and glued repair to one foot. 46" high. ESTIMATE $1,000-2,000 PROVENANCE: From the Solomon collection in Wolverine Lake, Michigan. Purchased in Kanganaman Village in 1979, exhibited in "The Ritual Art of the Sepik River" (Plate I) in April 1984 at the Trisolini Gallery of Ohio University.
