This lot consists of a watercolor and pastel illustration on paper, done in the vibrant Afro-Cuban style of Wilfredo Lam (Cuban, 1902-1982). Image depicts a soaring, feline figure swathed in shadow and smoothed by elegant line. This gorgeous mixed media would be a highlight to any modern art collection. An inscription at lower right reads, "Wilm 1977". Ripe with modernist influence and subdued color. This unframed piece measures approximately 14" x 10.75".

Wilfredo Lam (Cuban, 1902-1982) was born and raised in Sagua La Grande, Cuba, a village in the sugar farming province of Villa Clara. After moving to Havana and pursuing an education in painting, Lam split his time between formal art training and the exploratory world of his nonconformist artistic contemporaries. Lam was an expert at marrying modern art stylizations with primitive motifs that he drew from a rich local Afro-Cuban tradition. He bucked the notion of individual glorification, focusing instead on the vein of humanity that informs all great creation. A true visionary in his age, Lam's works continue to be discovered and appreciated for their overarching appeal.
