This lot consists of a pastel illustration on paper, done in the vibrant Afro-Cuban style of Manuel Mendive (Cuban, 1944 - ). Organic shapes emerge from clouds of pure pigment. A serene face takes form at left, while other forms seem to dance and billow through the negative space of the picture. This gorgeous mixed media would be a highlight to any modern art collection. An inscription at lower right reads, "Mendive 1991". Ripe with modernist influence and tropical color. This unframed piece measures approximately 13.75" x 16.75".

Lot is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity signed "Mendive". Certificate reads, "Certifico que esta es una obra original de Manuel MENDIVE Hoyo [I certify that this is an original work by Manuel MENDIVE Hoyo]". The given title is "Egguwe" [sp?], medium given is pastel, with dimensions of 35.5cm x 43cm, and the year of creation being 1991.

Manuel Mendive (Cuban, 1944-) was born in Havana. In 1963, he graduated from the San Alejandro Academy of Plastic Arts, and was soon exhibiting his work in many solo and group exhibits. Mendive's work has been enthusiastically received both in his native Cuba and across the globe. Over the years, Manuel Mendive has freely explored a multitude of artistic mediums, with strong influences coming from the Santeria religion and the rich, colorful, often painful history of Cuba. His works are beloved for their primal beauty, their vibrancy, and the soul that each piece is infused with.
