Muruk (Murik) Lakes region Slit Drum from New Guinea. Features elaborate figural and curvilinear decoration with polychrome embellishments. Comes with a striking stick or wand. Measures 60" x 13" x 11". Carved from a felled tree the slit drum, or garamut, is the most important instrument in the Sepik River region. It is engraved and painted in different stages, and kept in the men's ritual house for ceremonies such as male initiations. Good overall condition with wear. Hill Auction Gallery will not ship.
