Description

Mwai Palembai spirit mask from Sepik region in New Guinea. Features a facial form with elongated features, cowrie shell inlay, woven grass and applied faux hair. This type of mask is the second most important mask on the Sepik river region. It is used during ceremonial sing sings, particularly in a ceremonial dance preceding the initiation of young men. It is attached to the Tumbuan, the large basketry dancing dress, and is said to represent the face of the dancing spirit. Measures 20" x 6". Good overall condition with wear.
