Description
Rare New Guinea Mai (Mwai) Mask from the Sepik region. Features an elongated form of a face with cowrie shell inlay and natural human hair. This type of mask is the second most important mask on the Sepik river region. It is used during ceremonial sing sings, particularly in a ceremonial dance preceding the initiation of young men. It is attached to the Tumbuan, the large basketry dancing dress, and is said to represent the face of the dancing spirit. Measures 34" x 8".
