Vintage Tumbuan / Tambanum ceremonial mask from New Guinea. Features an elongated facial form decorated with carved bird adornment and polychrome decoration. Artist information on verso. A Tumbuan mask would have been worn during all ceremonial dances particularly that preceding the initiation of young men. In earlier times these would have been part of preparations for head hunting expedition and other secret initiation rites. Often worn by men who would run through the village and scare women and children that could not participate in the ceremonies. Measures 28" x 13". Good overall condition with age related wear.
