William McKendree Snyder attribution,(Madison, IN, 1848-1930), "Beech Trees", 30" X 20", oil on canvas. William Snyder was one of the earliest artist to paint in Brown Co., Indiana in the 1870s. Snyder was born in Liberty, Indiana in 1848. He settled permanently in Madison, Indiana where he specialized in dense forests, especially beech trees. He studied in Cincinnati, New York, & Philadelphia. Snyder fought in the Civil War on the Union side and reportedly survived the infamous Andersonville prisoner-of-war camp. One of Indiana's premier artists. Signed Snyder & dated 1885 on back of canvas. Fine original condition and in original frame.
