c. 1857 Civil War Era, U.S. Army Military Percussion Breech-loader Carbine made by SMITH (American Machine Works), Springfield, Massachusetts, Choice Fine.
This original Civil War Era U.S. Military Percussion Breech-loader Carbine has a 21.5", .50 caliber rifled Barrel. Estimated total number these guns produced is only 30,000. Generous amounts of original case colors and original arsenal finish. Stamped on left side of breech -block "ADDRESS / POULTNEY & TRIMBLE / BALTIMORE, U.S.A., SMITHS PATENT / JUNE 23 1857". Light spotty surface rust with some areas of salt and pepper rust pitting, especially on the butt plate. The stock is solid with light scratches and dings from use with a clear Inspector's cartouche. Overall, in good mechanical working order.
