Beginning in 1804, The French Civil Code, or Napoleonic Code, was established under Napoleon Bonaparte. It strongly influenced the laws of many countries, especially those during the Napoleonic Wars and Middle Eastern countries seeking to modernize their political and governmental standards. This collection of laws and legal codes were established based on Justinian and Roman law rather than preexisting French laws.



Alexander Duranton was an early 19th-century French lawyer primarily remembered for his extensive treatise on French law, ‘According to the Civil Code’. With this work, Duranton became one of the most important and best commentators on Napoleonic code.
