Description
1690 King Louis XIV Ordinances Civil & Criminal LAW Death Penalty Galley Rowing
“It is legal because I wish it!” – Louis XIV, King of France
The Louis Code, or Ordinances of Louis XIV, were a series of laws and jurisdictions that King Louis made in 1667 and 1670. The 1667 “Ordinance of Saint-Germain-en-Lay” codifies civil law. It includes thirty-five articles that chiefly deal with hierarchy of courts as well as disciplines and procedures in court. The ordinances also modified rules that related to the public’s civil status and social classes. These laws were an important stage in the reconstruction of France. In 1670, the ordinances focused on the criminal justice system, particularly the use of galley rowing and the death penalty. Louis XIV determined that both were used in good spirit and would continue being used in France.
