Description
1865 1ed History of French Revolution Napoleon Bonaparte Consulate Empire Thiers
“They pried into the most secret recesses, ransacked every depository of papers, broke open every lock, and enjoyed the twofold gratification of curiosity and destruction.” ― Adolphe Thiers, The History of the French Revolution
Born during the French Revolution, Adolphe Thiers became a famous French historian, focusing on the history of France and the importance of the French Revolution. He began writing his “History of the French Revolution” in the early 1820s, and this book would be the foundation for his literary fame and reputation, also providing a boost to his political career.
While serving as the President of the Council, he began writing a thorough account of the Consulate and Empire after bargaining with Britain to obtain the ashes of Napoleon. Unfortunately, not all critics loved ‘Histoire du Consulat et de l’Empire.’ Chateaubriand is quoted as calling it ‘odious advertisement for Bonaparte.’ It is because of this book that Napoleon Bonaparte’s legacy is prominent outside of France. Thiers idolizes Napoleon and presents him in a state of heroism.
This 4-volume set is a rare and important set, published in Philadelphia in 1842. It was translated into English out of the original French with added notes by Frederick Shoberl.
