A PRIMITIVE LOW RELIEF AND POLYCHROME TEAK CANOE PROW SPLASH BOARD, POSSIBLY MASSIM TRIBE, TROBRIAND ISLANDS, MILNE BAY, PAPUA NEW GUINEA, EARLY/MID 20TH CENTURY, the ancestral figure squats at center crest, flanked by scrolling organic forms WITH TRACES OF RED AND BLUE PIGMENTS. Height: 20 1/2" Width: 23" Depth: 1" Provenance: Estate of Laura Gerow Bramlette, heiress of Morton D. May and the Mays Department Store fortune.
Condition
Now lacking shell decoration, loss of pigment, some cracking throughout, mild exposure to wood worm, but overall in good condition, wear commensurate with age and use.
