Pre-Columbian, Bolivia, Tiahuanaco (Tiwanaku) culture, ca. 600 to 900 CE. A beautiful, hand-built, and highly-burnished ceramic kero with a planar base, tall walls that gently expand to create the deep interior cavity, and a thin yet sturdy rim. The lower body boasts a solid panel of espresso-hued pigment, and a horizontal white stripe delineates it from the upper body. The upper body is decorated with a pair of painted, highly-stylized avian figures defined by wide eyes, a prominent aquiline beak, elaborate headdresses, outstretched wings, and streamlined tail feathers, all in hues of crimson, grey, cream, and black atop an orange ground. Size: 3.375" W x 5" H (8.6 cm x 12.7 cm).

Professionally reconstructed and restored from multiple large pieces with resurfacing and overpainting along near-invisible break lines. Minor abrasions to rim, body, and base, with light fading to areas of original pigmentation. Light earthen deposits throughout. Old inventory label on base.
