Roman Republic, L. Valerius Flaccus, Rome, ca. 108 to 107 BCE. Obverse: Draped bust of Victory right; below chin, XVI monogram. Reverse: Mars advancing left, holding spear and trophy; apex before, grain ear behind, L VALERI FLACCI in two lines downward in left field. L. Valerius Flaccus was what was known as a "moneyer", or one of several people who were responsible for striking the coinage of the time for the Republic prior to when that responsibility was assumed by the Empire. The moneyers often times placed their names of their coinage. Crawford 306/1; RSC Valeria 11. Size: 0.8" W (2 cm); 3.9 grams
