Autograph Letter Signed. 4pp. To American architect A.D.F. Hamlin, whose father, Cyrus Hamlin, was a missionary to the Ottoman Empire in the 19th century, founding Roberts College in Constantinople, before becoming President of Middlebury College in Vermont.

Called "The Friend of the Oppressed", Georgina King Lewis was a philanthropist with Socialist sympathies from a prominent British Quaker family; beyond her work in the London slums, she went abroad to aid Boer women and children in British concentration camps of South Africa - and Bulgarians oppressed by Ottoman Turkey.

King had first visited Turkey in 1904 "to feed and clothe" 15,000 Bulgars who fled from Turkey into Bulgaria and to welcome them "back in their homes in Macedonia". She had recently returned after the "Young Turk" revolution had overthrown the monarchy and was somewhat encouraged by the changes she witnessed in Istanbul.

Writing to thank Hamlin for sending copies of his father's autobiography , she notes "how deeply interested I am in Turkey and all that concerns its highest interest. The Young Turkish party have made great efforts to improve the condition of things but as they say, 'We have not a sufficient number of good men to put into responsible places'. It is very pathetic and one wonders what will happen next. I have always believed that your Fathers work not only made Bulgaria what she is but has made these young Turks anxious for the real uplift of their people. Progress is slow but the right will win in time and we always look back with great thankfulness to God for those who have done so much to bring the Kingdom of Heaven on earth..."
