Description
Mid 19th century, 144 x 109 cm, Central Asia, Uzbekistan, Emirate of Kokand
This gorgeous decorative ikat hanging was previously published by Herrmann. Its black field appears like a dark window illuminated by the blazing design of white and red forms. The wide red-ground border contains spaciously conceived motifs in white, yellow, green and aubergine. This impressive textile is from the Ferghana valley which still belonged to the Emirate of Kokand at the time it was made, i.e. before the Russian invasion. – One horizontal tear in the lower right border, otherwise very well preserved. Backed with a fine linen fabric.
KIRDÖK, MUAMMAR, Ikat. Textilkunst von der Seidenstraße. Vienna 1993, no. 9
HERRMANN, EBERHART, Asiatische Teppich- und Textilkunst 2. Munich 1990, no. 68
