Description
**First Time At Auction**
West Africa, Burkina Faso, Lobi peoples, ca. first half of the 20th century CE. A fine hand-carved wooden male figure with delineated legs, a distended abdomen, and slender arms held atop the waist. The head exhibits raised ovoid eyes, a bulbous nose, pursed lips, cupped ears, and a pointed chin, all beneath a crested coiffure. Given this figure's protective role, it was most likely placed on or around an altar as part of a group of various 'bateba' figures (literal translation of "bateba phuwe" is "normal/ordinary carved wooden figure"). The precise meaning of each figure's shape and posture is difficult to ascertain, since these carvings were created as the result of a seer's vision for an afflicted individual. Size: 3" W x 15.375" H (7.6 cm x 39.1 cm); 15.7" H (39.9 cm) on included custom stand.
Provenance: ex-private Los Angeles, California, USA collection
All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.
