Description
**Originally Listed At $200**
East Asia, China, Neolithic Period, ca. 3000 to 2000 BCE. A handsome, broad-mouthed bowl with a gently corseted neck, a wide, flaring rim, and two small, nub-like handles on the shoulder. A linear decoration of repeated bands and curves is painted in broad black strokes on the interior of the rim and around the exterior body, creating an elegant form. Size: 8.2" W x 4.5" H (20.8 cm x 11.4 cm)
This piece is from the very early pottery tradition found at various archaeological sites along the Yellow River Basin (modern day Gansu Province in northwestern China to Henan Province in central China), from the culture sometimes called the Yangshao. The painted motifs on the urn's surface demonstrate a remarkably early use of fine brush work.
