East Asia, China, Warring States Period, ca. 475 to 221 BCE. A mold-cast belt hook formed from leaded-bronze with a curved body and a raised disc on the verso for attachment. The arching serpent head on the front serves as the actual hook for the belt, its nose just slightly wider than the rest of the snout. A trio of vertical grooves on the front creates a scaled texture for the serpent, and the entire accessory is covered in thick layers of green and brown patina. Size: 0.6" W x 4.5" H (1.5 cm x 11.4 cm); 5.6" H (14.2 cm) on included custom stand.

Condition
Hook and body repaired from three large pieces with small chips and light adhesive residue along break lines. Raised disc likely reattached, but expertly concealed if so. Slight bending to overall form, with light encrustations, and softening to some finer details. Light earthen deposits as well as great green and brown patina throughout.
