Description
This is a first edition, first issue copy of "Italian Tales. Tales of Humour, Gallantry, and Romance, Selected and Translated from the Italian" (253 pages), with 16 drawings by George Cruikshank, published by Charles Baldwyn (London) in 1824. This has 17 tales, including the 'Dead Rider' tale and illustration, later removed. The cover (4.875" x 7.25"), brown leather spine and outside corners, gilt decoration and gilt lettering in a black background to the spine, has scuffs to the leather, bumps to the outside corners, and surface wear to the marbled boards. The connection at the spine is secure. There are no prominent stains or significant tears. The inside is in good condition, with no stamps or other attachments. There are pencil notations to the front end pages, regarding the edition particulars, but no writing elsewhere, and no ink or other indelible marks anywhere. The binding is secure, with no loose or missing pages. There are occasional upper outside corner creases, none of which are sharp bends. I've found no page tears. There are a very few spot stains, but the type and illustrations are uniformly clean and unfaded.
