Rare, hand-colored coastal chart of San Francisco and part of the Bay, with soundings. Extends to the Mission de Dolores and Pt. San Quentin. Shows street layout, buildings, wharfs, roads, elevations, etc. One of the best large early maps of the city. Issued soon after the gold rush, the map shows the city extending only about eight or so city blocks from the waterfront. Names piers, wharfs, parks and roads as well as showing individual buildings such as City Hall, Post Office, hospitals, and churches. Info on public buildings, reservoirs, sailing notes, shoals, and tidal notations are included in top left and lower right-hand corners. Pub. 1853 by the U. S. Coast Survey. Second state of the 1853 edition. The 1852 first edition lacks depth soundings. Varies from the first 1853 state by addition of tidal information in the upper left and corrections to the names of wharves and piers. Minimal toning to folds. Few small archival tape reinforcements to rear. Paper thin just above title, as published. Modern coloring. 18 x 25.5
