Description:
Color lithographed map. 42.5x69 cm (16¾x27¼").
Very rare map of San Francisco from Islais Creek north, created the month following the great earthquake and fire, with printed color and key, indicating the boundaries of the burnt area; the limits of the districts of the city for military control (numbered 1 through 6); the Permanent Relief Camps under military control; the headquarters of military districts; the headquarters of relief districts; and, as an addendum, "Locations of Hot Food Kitchens." There is some additional hand coloring and notations within the burnt district, only partially legible, and in upper left at the title are some other notes, referring to the size of the burnt area, the population of San Francisco, etc. Signature, perhaps printed, of Wm. W. Harts as Captain Corps of Engineers, Chief Engineer, Pac. Div. No printed copies of this map are located in OCLC; there is only a "Glossy photograph on Kodak paper" credited to Mason Weymouth, and listings of internet resources of that glossy photograph. A very important map, capturing governmental efforts to maintain order and provide relief in the aftermath of the catastrophe.
