Description
A fantastic magnetite Taino Cemi or ceremonial figure, c. AD 1000 - 1500, well-carved in magnetite, with large eyes and open mouth ear with large spools. The figure with hands together over a light belly bulge, representing fertility, and feet together. The backside is detailed with concentric circles on the back of the head, two panels with lines either side of the spine and roughened depression on each buttock which correspond to the similar roughened eyes and mouth. A fine example of Taino ritual stone working. 4 1/2 x 2 3/4 in (11.4 x 7 cm). Well-preserved and intact, the magnetite possesses a slight magnetic field. Comes with metal display stand. Ex collection of Flor Maria Alvarado and Carlton Rood of the Dominican Republic. Mr. Rood was the author of 'A Dominican Chronicle', a concise history of the island, and a US diplomat as part of the A.I.D. program from 1965 to 1969; Ex collection of Alfredo Carrada acquired from Mr. Rood in 1989.
