Description
A lovely Taino hard stone Cohoba bowl, c. AD 1000 - 1500, exquisitely carved in a white hard stone, a white vein running through the midsection. The ovoid bowl is quite deep with rounded walls and bottom and forms the torso of a monkeylike figure whose head is finely detailed with large ears, well-formed nose and mouth and wearing large ear spools. The figure's hands rest near his face and opposite his head are perched feet and genitals. 5 3/4 x 3 1/8 in (14.6 x 8 cm). Nice surface mineralization. Ex collection of Flor Maria Alvarado and Carlton Rood of the Dominican Republic. Mr. Rood was the author of 'A Dominican Chronicle', a concise history of the island, and a US diplomat as part of the A.I.D. program from 1965 to 1969; Ex collection of Alfredo Carrada acquired from Mr. Rood in 1989.
