Description
**First Time At Auction**

Pre-Columbian, Dominican Republic, Taino, ca. 1000 to 1500 CE. A lovely ceremonial hand axe known as a celt, hand-carved from mottled emerald-green hardstone with dark inclusions. The celt has a conical handle which gradually widens to a rounded body and a curved blade edge. The Yoruba African people that the Spanish brought as slaves to the Caribbean found these stones in fields and linked them to the Yoruba deity Shango (sometimes Chango) because of their thunderbolt shape. Lucite display stand for photography purposes only. Size: 6" L x 2" W (15.2 cm x 5.1 cm).
