Description
Taino. An exquisite cohoba stand made to be used to hold vessels containing the hallucinogen cohoba. The flat head supporting the bowl or vessel. These were usually made of wood, stone examples are exceedingly rare. The head is reversed, a unique design format used only by the Taino. This may be symbolic homage to the owl, the shamans' primary ally. Note the secondary face created at the end of the vertebral column. Swirls indicate nose. Superbly sculpted face. Arms and legs well define on reverse. Free Standing. Acquired from the John Fulling estate, Ft Lauderdale, FL. in the early 1980s. From Hispaniola. Provenance: Larry Roberts, author of "Taino Sculpture: Art of the Gods" and "Taino Hallucinogenic Implements Inhaling the Cosmic Dust." Made of Marble. Size: 12.75'' x 6'' x 3.5'' (32 x 15 x 9 cm).
