Description
Taino. A tall superbly sculpted male, defining the Taino craftsman’s skills as carvers. This important piece is strangely reminiscent of the art of the Rapa Nui culture of Easter Island, a corresponding culture. Probably representing the shamanic exercise of long periods for fasting as the piece is emancipated looking, the shins on the legs are accentuated as well as the nobby attenuated vertebrae. This could be a visual metaphor for taking cohoba where the ritual objective is to die spiritually to be reborn. Free standing and strikingly expressive. Made of a heavy granitoid stone. From the Carlton Alexander Rood collection, retired diplomat serving in the Dominican Republic. Provenance: Acquired by Alfredo Carrada, c.1990 and later Larry Roberts, author of "Taino Sculpture: Art of the Gods" and "Taino Hallucinogenic Implements Inhaling the Cosmic Dust." Taino culture. Size: 14.5'' x 3.5'' x 3.5'' (37 x 9 x 9 cm).
