Description
An important Full Figure Anthropic pestle featuring Baibrama, god of fertility and cassava. The pestle represents a cohoba stand, symbolically denoting its use for crushing cohoba seeds to powder for inhalation. The sitting god with phallic display as well as a cohoba receptacle at the top of the head typifies cohoba stand design formats. Cohoba was the ritual drug consumed by chiefs and other elites to communicate with the Gods. It is large (height 9.6") for Taino lithic art, which is usually smaller and more portable. The pestle is made of basalt. Published in "Taino Sculpture, Art of the Gods", Page 29, Figure 7. Made of basalt. Provenance: Larry Roberts, curator. Purchased from Dan Purcara, "Lost Art" in NYC 1992.
Exhibited at the Orlando Museum of Art, Florida, 2013-2014. Roberts is author of the books: "Taino Sculpture, Art of the Gods" and "Taino Hallucinogenic Implements, Inhaling the Cosmic Dust".
