Description
Carved from a single piece of lignum vitae. Anthrophic form with four stout legs and geometric swirls on upper front portion of seat. Genitals represented on underside, ca. 1000-1500 AD. 15 3/4" long. Some damage to the lower jaw, otherwise in excellent condition.
The Duho is a low bench or seat used by elites during specific ceremonial events. A stylized man/frogs head has been carved at the top of this seat. The low bench format was common among existing pre-Colombian Cultures of Central America. Made of lignum vitae or iron wood, a member of the creosote tree family, a contributing factor in its survival. Provenance: Larry Roberts, curator. Ex Rood Collection (1945-1987) to Alfredo Carrada. Roberts is author of the books: "Taino Sculpture, Art of the Gods" and "Taino Hallucinogenic Implements, Inhaling the Cosmic Dust".
