Description
A choice Egyptian terracotta funerary cone for Montuemhat, 25th - 26th Dynasty, Taharqa - Psamtik I, c. 675 - 648 BC, with four registers of hieroglyphics on the face which read 'The revered one before Osiris, the fourth prophet of Amun, Montuemhat, true of voice; his beloved wife, known to the king, mistress of the house, Wadjrenes, true of voice'. Montuemhat was an important official who was buried at Asasif in tomb (TT 34). He was a priest of Amun, a seal bearer of Upper and Lower Egypt, overseer of Upper Egypt, hereditary noble and vice overseer of the prophets in the temples to name some of his titles. Cones such as these were placed in rows above the entrance of a tomb chapel to create a frieze and there are many ideas about their function and meanings, such as symbolically imitating the ends of the poles that formed the roof of ancient Egyptian houses.7 1/4 x 3 3/8 x 3 1/4 in (18.5 x 8.6 x 8.3 cm). End of cone restored, face intact and untouched. Cf. Davies & Macadam, A Corpus of Inscribed Funerary Cones, 1957, no. 420 for the type; Ex New York private collection.
