Ancient Egypt, New Kingdom, Eighteenth Dynasty, ca. 1550 to 1292 BCE. A coarse fired earthenware funerary cone, its wide, flat, round end stamped with the following hieroglyphs (in translation): "The venerated one in the presence of Osiris, the king’s scribe Huy of Hutheret-ib, true of voice." Funerary cones, representing the ends of chapel roof support beams, were traditionally inserted in rows (their flat ends facing outward) above the mud brick entrances of the superstructures of non-royal tombs in Thebes. Made of fired Nile mud, cones like these are some of our earliest written records. Most are found in the Theban Necropolis in Upper Egypt and the surrounding area, where the tradition seems to have been particularly strong. Size: 5.5" L x 3.25" W (14 cm x 8.3 cm)
