Item Details
Description
Paul Jean Marie Sain (French/Avignon, 1853-1908) "Un Coin de l'Orne", June 1899, oil on canvas, signed lower left "P. Sain", titled, dated, signed and indistinctly inscribed "Juin 1899 Paul Sain 33 ___ Paris" on stretcher verso, inscribed by the artist in blue on stretcher verso "Robert Peugot fils, Valentigney (Doubs), Gde Vitesse, Envoi de Paul Sain 66 Rue B__, Paris", verso of canvas stenciled "Vue M. Chabod & Co., Extra Fines Toiles a Tableaux, Rue Jacob", 35-1/4" x 51-5/8". Presented in a heavily molded giltwood exhibition frame with bands of stylized foliate, annulated, acanthine, oak leaf and acorn carving. Provenance: The artist to Robert Peugot fils, Valentigney, Doubs; Madison Galleries, Atlanta, Georgia, to a private collector, New Orleans, Louisiana. Paul Jean Marie Sain studied under noted Academic painters Jean Leon Gerome and Charles Michel Guilbert d'Anelle. Sain made his debut at the Paris Salon in 1879. His paintings of marine scenes and lush romantic landscapes were well received and he was awarded honorable mention in 1883, a third place medal in 1886, a bronze medal in 1889 and in 1900 at the Paris Exposition Universelle. He was made a Knight of the Legion of Honor in 1895. His works are in the collection of the Musee du Louvre, Paris, Musee du Luxembourg, Paris, Musee de Perpignan and the Alencon Fine Art Museum. Valentigney, Doubs, located in Eastern France, is most well known as the place where Peugeot began their operations and several members of the Peugeot family still live in the region. The artist wrote "Grande Vitesse" in the inscription which means "Great Speed" playfully referring to Peugeot, a company known for their racing bicycles and fast cars.
Condition
In overall very good condition. Retains original canvas. A small transparent surface drip to the lower left edge. Blacklight reveals a few minor and unobtrusive touches of inpainting: to water lower left quadrant, foliage at lower right and middle right, tree trunks at upper left, upper middle tree line and to blades of grass below figures. All inpainting nicely executed. Appears to have been cleaned within the last ten years. Signature is good. All inscriptions en verso are clear and intact. Painting is as luminous when viewed in person as is portrayed in the catalogue photo. The frame exhibits a few restorations scattered throughout; however, most of the restorations are not within the field of vision. Re-gilding in a few areas throughout. The frame is quite dramatic and extremely appealing. Structurally sound.
