Magna Graecia, Southern Italy, near present-day Ignazia, Gnathian, ca. 340 to 320 BCE. An attractive wheel-thrown pottery oinochoe with a flat base, a rotund body which tapers to a smooth shoulder, a squat neck with a trefoil spout, and a vertical strap handle which curves near the top of the spout rim. Most of the exterior is covered in a lustrous jet-black glaze, and scattered traces of fugitive white pigment are visible around the upper shoulder. An elegant example of Gnathian-ware pottery! Size: 2.25" W x 4.2" H (5.7 cm x 10.7 cm).

Condition
Small nicks to handle, body, rim, and base, with fading to areas of glaze, and loss to most fugitive white pigment, otherwise intact and very good. Light earthen deposits and root marks throughout. Old inventory label beneath base.
