Description
**First Time At Auction**
Magna Graecia, South Italic Colonies, near present day Ignazia, ca. 340 to 320 BCE. An attractive blackware pottery pitcher decorated via the Gnathian technique with fugitive red, white, and yellow pigments atop a black glaze. The graceful ornamentation depicts an elaborate grapevine pattern along the shoulder, just below horizontal bands of tongue motifs, circle and dash designs, and incised striations that adorn the vessel's neck. Meanwhile, the vessel itself boasts a classically elegant silhouette with a ring-form foot, an egg-shaped body, a narrow neck leading to a sloped shoulder, and a trefoil spout. Size: 4.8" Diameter x 8.9" H (12.2 cm x 22.6 cm)
Provenance: ex-Nancy and Dr. E.F. Simpson collection, Los Angeles, California, USA, acquired from 1970 to 2000
