**First Time At Auction**

Magna Graecia, Southern Italy, Ignazia, Gnathian Teano Ware, ca. 4th century BCE. An elegant pair of pottery vessels, an oinochoe and a guttus, both enveloped in black glaze and adorned by floral motifs in pink and white fugitive pigments. First, the oinochoe presents an egg-shaped body, a slender neck, and a trefoil spout, all sitting upon an applied ring-form foot. A thin handle stretches from the back of the spout to the rounded shoulder. Alternatively, the guttus exhibits a squat form with an applied foot, a bulbous body, a loop handle extending from the round shoulder, an attenuated neck, and a flared rim. Size (of largest): 3.5" in diameter x 4.875" H (8.9 cm x 12.4 cm)

Gnathia ware is named for the site where it was first discovered - the Apulian site of Egnathia (also Gnatia, Egnatia, Ignazia). The black glaze ware is traditionally decorated with floral and other decorative motifs in red, white, or yellow hues. Scholars believe that its production most likely was centered around Taras, with primary workshops in Egnathia and Canosa. The quantity and quality of Greek colonial Apulian potters increased significantly following the Peloponnesian War when Attic exports dramatically decreased. Apulian artistry demonstrates influences of Ionian (Athenian, Attic) conventions, as well as Doric (western colonial Greek) styles, with a palpable native Italian aesthetic.

Larger has repair and restoration to handle. Smaller has repair and restoration to handle, neck, and spout. Both have a few expected nicks. Otherwise, both are very nice with great remaining pigments and wonderful iridescence.
