Indonesia, Borneo, Central Kalimantan, Dayak peoples, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. A fine ladle made from half of a hollowed-out coconut shell and a wooden handle. The handle features an abstract anthropomorphic standing figure with almond eyes, a gaping mouth, a broad nose, and semicircular ears, all above a slender body and legs integral with the incised handle bands. The handle terminal is situated on the rim of the coconut scoop, held in place by a small groove and a single wooden peg, with the lower handle portion fed through the bottom of the scoop. Covered in layers of fine light-brown patina, this is a lovely example of a well-used and well-loved ladle! Lucite display stand for photography purposes only. Size: 6" W x 11" H (15.2 cm x 27.9 cm).

Condition
Expected surface wear and abrasions, a couple of stable hairline fissures, fading to carved details, with small losses around scoop rim and handle, and some light discoloration - all commensurate with age. Light earthen deposits within recessed areas, and nice light-brown patina along handle.
