Description
Southeast Asia, Borneo, Ngaju Dayak, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A finely carved wood stopper depicting a seated male karuhai created to fit a bamboo tube. The seated somber and noble looking figure sits with crossed arms resting upon upraised knees. The figure dons a headband/headdress upon his enlarged head, the visage incised with simple yet very communicative features presenting a quiet and composed disposition. A wonderful example with a nice blackened patina to the Borneo hardwood.
"Karuhai" are Ngaju Dayak charms; they are the top, carved, wooden components placed on hollowed bamboo tubes and annointed with blood, egg, various libations.
