Description

A rare carved wooden ceremonial cup with elaborate design and janus mask faces on top of cup and elaborate detailed face on the bottom with well worn handle. The Bottom of the cup has "Viallage De Nio..." and a name, and other things incised into the cup that are worn away. Obvious handling and wear, a rare old example. Pende peoples, Congo, Africa. The sculpture measures 6.5 inches tall. Ex Sam Hilu collection, noted author of several books on African Art / Textiles.
