Description
This is a KO DANSU or SMALL MERCHANT'S chest in the style of TANSU. It might have been taken to sea, it might have been used for money collection, as it has the 'hidden' drawers. Also referred to as KODANSU. This chest is approx. 36 inches wide by 24 inches high by 18 inches deep. It has handles for moving. Often TANSU are set on top of each other for storage in Japanese homes. The Japanese to English translations and meanings for tansu include 'chest of drawers, bureau, cabinet, tansu, dresser. This tansu has a black lacquer frame with UNUSUAL rectangular hardware. Most hardware on tansus are oval or circular. You would sit this tansu on top of or underneath the matching item 92
