Description
Somerset County, Pennsylvania, dated 1852, pine. Dovetailed box on bracket feet, and retaining its stenciled decoration on a red/yellow grained ground, and with black trim. At center is "Mosses;. Kemp;. 1852" in a cartouche. The cartouche is flanked by other stenciled motifs as well as "J" on the left and "K" on the right (often found on furniture by Jacob Knagy). 27" high, 49.5" wide, 24.5" deep. Moses Kemp was born in 1832 in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, to John Kemp and Susan Miller. He married Sarah Yutzy in 1852, suggesting that this chest was made as a marriage chest.
