Author: John Langton Sanford - John Langton Sanford was an English historical writer. From 1852 to the end of 1855 Sanford was joint editor of The Inquirer, established as a Unitarian periodical in 1842., Meredith Townsend - Meredith White Townsend was an English journalist and editor of The Spectator. With Richard Holt Hutton, he was joint-editor of the Spectator until 1887, and he was largely instrumental in making it an established success, writing most of the political articles and the opening paragraphs every week. His two chief publications were The Great Governing Families of England (1865), written in conjunction with Langton Sanford, and Asia and Europe (1901).

Townsend was considered as one of the finest journalists of his day, and he has since been called "the greatest leader writer ever to appear in the English Press."

Book Details: This complete two-volume set features a deluxe fancy leather binding, privately done by Hatchards in Picadilly. The books are bound in tan cloth and leather with raised bands and gilt lettering and tooling to the spine. Volume one features a cloth-backed fold-out map of “The Great Landowners of England & Walesâ€.

From the preface: “In the compilation of these histories, the object has not been to produce a work of original research, or one based on unpublished or exclusive materials, but (while not neglecting to make use of any facts of this description which the Authors†own reading occasionally supplied) to subject rather the matter already existing in a more or less scattered form in printed books to the test of the accepted rules of historical evidence, and (with the limitations imposed by selection and condensation) to place before the general reader, in a popular form, the leading ascertained facts in the history of our Great Families in connection with the results of the latest researches into our national history.â€
Condition / Notes: These beautifully bound volumes show very well, with some typical indications of age and wear, including shelfwear and rubbing. The hinges are cracked, and have been reinforced with tape on the exterior. Bindings and text blocks remain sound. Text is clear and legible through mild age toning. These volumes display ex-library treatments and attachments.
