Description
**First Time At Auction**
Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Chupicuaro, ca. 500 BCE to 300 CE. A hand-built pottery female figure standing atop delineated legs and curved feet. She is defined by voluptuous thighs, a simple loincloth decorated with dozens of impressed dots, a large tunic with a central circular button, and an incised necklace. Attenuated arms project from rounded shoulders with the left holding a small, wide-eyed puppy. Coffee-bean-shaped eyes, an upturned nose, a petite mouth, and enormous ear spools comprise her minimalist visage, and an intricate, roundel-adorned headdress covers the top of her head. The figure is enveloped in cream-hued slip, and traces of original white and orange pigment are still visible. Size: 2.7" W x 6" H (6.9 cm x 15.2 cm).
Provenance: private Southern California, USA collection, acquired in the 1970s to mid-1980s

Condition
Repairs to both legs, both arms, puppy head, and top of headdress, with light resurfacing, overpainting, and small chips along break lines. Minor nicks to legs, body, arms, and head, with fading to pigmentation and some finer details. Light earthen and manganese deposits as well as nice traces of original pigmentation throughout.
