This large-format illustrated edition contains color plates and numerous in-text illustrations (some full page), as well as a fold-out color frontispiece in Volume III. “A Short History of the English Peopleâ€, which appeared in 1874 gave Green an assured place in the first rank of historical writers.
The “Short Historyâ€, which in 1915 was republished as part of the Everyman Library, may be said to have begun a new epoch in the writing of history, making the social, industrial, and moral progress of the people its main theme. It sold 235,000 copies in England alone.
Condition / Notes: These decorative antique volumes show very well, with minimal indications of age and wear, including shelfwear and rubbing. The bindings and text blocks are firm. Text and illustrations are clear and crisp through mild age toning. The fold-out map in vol. III is torn along a fold. Volume III also has a small scrape to the front board.
