Thomas Baxter was a China painter in addition to being an engraver. He studied and exhibited at the Royal Academy and his works demonstrate a striking penchant for line and an embrace of the Neoclassical movement. According to Baxter, inspiration for his compositions came from imagery found in pieces from Herculaneum and other ancient sites.
